A laparoscopic needle holder built in titanium rather than steel. The weight saving is roughly forty percent, and it is felt within the first few minutes of a long suturing run — hand fatigue is the limiting factor in extended intracorporeal suturing, not grip strength.
The jaws are faced with tungsten carbide. Carbide holds a needle without the rocking that develops in a plain steel jaw as it wears, and when the faces do eventually dull the inserts are replaceable rather than the instrument being scrapped.
The Ethicon-pattern spring handle self-opens between throws, so the needle can be repositioned without releasing the grip. Titanium is also non-magnetic and takes autoclaving without the surface pitting that eventually catches thread on a steel instrument.

Is the titanium version worth the extra cost over stainless steel?

AIt depends on how much you suture. For long intracorporeal suturing the roughly forty percent weight saving makes a real difference to hand fatigue. For occasional suturing the stainless steel version performs the same and costs considerably less.

Does the ratchet weaken with repeated autoclaving?

AIt should not. The mechanism is designed for the full service life of the instrument. If a ratchet becomes loose or fails to hold, contact us — that is not expected behaviour.
