A long, narrow, coarsely toothed jaw built for retrieval — dropped clips, spilled stones, fragments of specimen and anything else that has to be found and brought out.
The extended jaw length reaches into recesses a short grasper cannot, and the coarse teeth take a positive hold on hard, smooth objects that a fine serration simply slides off. A dropped gallstone in the subhepatic space is the classic case.
The narrow profile matters as much as the teeth: it can be worked into a gutter or behind the liver edge where a broader jaw will not pass. Not a tissue instrument — the teeth are far too aggressive for anything staying in the patient.

Can the jaw inserts be sharpened or reconditioned?

AScissors inserts can be reground a limited number of times. Grasper jaws are not resharpened — once the serrations wear, the insert is replaced. Inserts are individually stocked for that reason.

Which grasper should I use on bowel?

AUse the Babcock or the atraumatic pattern. Both are designed to hold without crushing. Do not use the toothed patterns on bowel — they are intended for tissue being removed.

How many inserts would you recommend for a starter set?

AA Maryland dissector, an atraumatic grasper, a Babcock, a toothed grasper and a scissors insert will cover most general laparoscopic work. Add the alligator for retrieval and a sealer if you have a suitable generator.

What is the advantage of the gold coating on the sealer?

AGold conducts better than steel and tissue chars onto it far less readily, so seal quality stays consistent across repeated applications and the jaw needs much less cleaning during a case.
